Last Friday we had our second dance of the year. It was our annual Sadie-Hawkins dance which always has a fun theme and location. This year we discovered our inner party animal at the local zoo. If anyone remembers, I went to this same dance as an animal last year, so I’ve definitely started a trend here. That’s beside the point though. On the way back from the dance, we had the windows down, wind blowing through our hair, and we were getting in some quality T-Swift jam time. And it just reminded me how important it is to have fun.
In the Passion of the Christ, which covers in great detail the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ, there’s a scene in which Jesus is working on a table out behind the house. His mother comes out and tells him to wash up for dinner, and he gently splashes her with some water and they banter back and forth for a minute. I really appreciate and love the inclusion of this scene in the movie because it reminds me that Jesus was fully human, and while that involved a lot of grief and pain and suffering, it also included times of great joy. Jesus had fun.
Fun is important and good, but being back in the swing of a stressful and jam-packed semester has pushed having fun aside in light of responsibilities and studies. But moments like last Friday remind me how important play is. And it made me think about the fact that making time for play is only going to get harder as I keep getting older, despite it being no less important for adults than it is for children. So I began to appreciate the time I have now. College gives people the most freedom and the least responsibility most of us will ever have in our lifetime simultaneously.
College is the time to be young and wild and free, and I’m gonna enjoy it while it lasts.
